Welcome to the beautiful City of Brockville on the St. Lawrence Seaway, one of the most attractive triathlon venues in Ontario.  Armagh Park and the Brockville Rowing Club is the site for 17th Annual Thousand Islands Triathlon & Duathlon.

We enjoyed another awesome event in 2009 with 500 participants in the various events, and 2010 promises more of the same. But let's hope it is a little cooler this year, than last!

We are also featuring the Super Sprint Triathlon for those experienced triathletes who want to do a short, fast one. So come on down to Brockville for the 2010 Thousand Islands Triathlon, Duathlon & SwimCycle races.

There is a race and a distance for everyone

Charity of the Event/Club of the Event

We are pleased and proud to announce that the Brockville and area YMCA is the Official Charity and the Club of the Thousand Islands Triathlon, Duathlon and Relays.  We encourage you to visit their booth on site. Many 'Y' volunteers and members will be helping out at the various points on the course and with pre-race preparations, so please say hi, and thanks!

For 150 years, the Brockville and Area YMCA has been active in the community as a charity dedicated to helping individuals grow in spirit, mind and body, and in service to others in an environment open to all. With help from our financial Assistance program, more than 1000 individuals of all ages and walks of life accessed the Brockville and Area YMCA facilities, programs and services even though they could not afford to pay full fees.

As a Somersault event participant, you have the opportunity to support the Brockville and Area YMCA by choosing to make a donation when you are entering online, or by clicking here to download a Pledge Form, which you can print and submit to a Brockville and Area YMCA representative when you arrive at the event.

junior program

We are proud to continue to build the Junior Program in 2010.  This program is designed to encourage those 12 years and older to participate, by including 2 year categories beginning at 13 & under, up to 18-19.  Athletes in these categories will feel comfortable in Somersault events, and are automatically ranked in the Junior Champions Challenge.

student discount

Students born in 1986 or later, and enrolled in school during the 2009 year, receive a 40% discount on the entry fee.

relays
Triathlon Relays are a fun feature of the Thousand Islands. Get a threesome (or a twosome) together for some fun and fitness!

try a tri challenge
It's back - and its for anyone who has always wanted to "Try a Tri" or those who don't want to be too competitive. We have shortened the run, just to take a little pressure off. BTW, mountain bikes and hybrid bikes are more than welcome in this event.

super sprint triathlon
This category and race will be separate from the Try A Tri Challenge. The Try A Tri is intended for the first timer, once a year, novice or recreational participant, while this race is geared to those who are a bit more serious but only want to go short and fast.

swimcycle
The SwimCycle consists of the swim and the cycle portion of the Olympic and Sprint Triathlons, in which SwimCycle participants start.  Those that enter these races will run from the cycle leg directly to the finish line from the T-Zone. We are offering limited age categories this year, and will add age categories as demand dictates.

olympic swim

For the first time i we are offering a solo swim.  This allows those with strong swimming backgrounds to duke it out with the triathletes in the water, and who knows, maybe take a first step to trying a tri. Swimmers will be timed after finishing the swim, running through the T-Zone and crossing the Finish Line.

championchip timing - by sportstats
We use Sportstats ChampionChip Timing at all Somersault races.  This timing system requires that all participants wear a ChampionChip Bracelet on your ankle during the race.  This bracelet contains a computer chip that allows you to be timed.

You are responsible for obtaining your ChampionChip Bracelet on race morning from the timing people at the Sportstats Tent near the Finish Line.  Do this at least 30 minutes before your race - earlier is better!  Races will not be held up waiting for those who forgot their bracelet.

You must return your ChampionChip Bracelet immediately after you cross the finish line.  You are responsible for the cost if it is not returned - and it is expensive.

your results - age as of december 31, 2009
Your personal results will be posted within 20 minutes of your finish. Check the results as soon as you can,. If you have finished in the top 3 in your age, weight, or relay category, go immediately to the Awards Table to claim your 'Award Medal Lanyard'.

If you find mistakes in the results, go to the Sportstats van near the Finish Line and provide them with the information you think is correct.  Have the results people make changes before you leave the event site, because they may not be able to do it after race day.

Results will be posted at www.somersault.ca the evening of the race.

course descriptions

For a map of the event site and all race courses, please click here.

1500, 750 and 200M Swims

The swim is in the St. Lawrence River.  Both swims begin at the Boat Ramp adjacent to the T-Zone with an open water start.  The swim course is a triangle of 750M.  The swimmers start heading South East from the dock, and make a turn to the West at 100M.  They swim West for 400 M and then turn North to swim the 250M to the exit ramp t the T-Zone.

The 1500M swimmers repeat this course and then exit at the ramp.  The ramp is a concrete bottomed boat ramp that allows participants to walk out of the water.  The T-Zone is 5M from the ramp.

Water temperature is usually 23 degrees Celsius in August.  Decisions on the number and order of the waves will be made on August 18 and communicated to the participants at the Race Kit Pick Up Tent.

2.3Km First Duathlon Run & Try A Tri Run

The run begins at the Start/Finish Line adjacent to the T-Zone and Brockville City Hall. The run is an out and back course with the first and last 700 meters on a closed roadway (Water St.). Runners head West from the start along Water St. and turn left onto St. Paul St. which becomes Jessie St.  They turn left onto Anne St., left on Hartley St. left again on Grant St. and finally right on Jessie St to return home. The course is generally flat throughout.

20Km Cycle Course

The 20Km cycle is an out and back course which begins at the exit to the Transition Zone adjacent to the Brockville Rowing Club on Water St. East and Market St. East.  Cyclists exit the Transition Zone onto Water St. which is closed to all but local traffic during the event (first and last 500M). They head East on Water St. to Ford St. where they turn left and go up a short steep hill to King St.  They turn right onto King St. East (Highway 2), and proceed to the turn around point on Highway 2.  They return by the same route to the T-Zone.

40Km Cycle Course

The 40Km cyclists do the same first loop as the 20Km cyclists, and then they repeat the King St. (Highway 2) portion of the course.   At the end of the first loop, they turn at the corner of King St. and Ford St. and repeat the first loop from there, returning to the T-Zone at the end of the second loop.

Nature of the Cycle Course

The cycle is a very gently rolling course on a good quality paved highway with paved shoulders most of the way. The route is not closed to traffic except for the 1st and last 500M. There is a difficult section at the corners of Ford St., with King St. and Water St.  These are right hand 90 degree corners.  This section is controlled by marshals and police, but cyclists should proceed with caution and should not be on their aero bars.

5 & 10Km Runs
The Sprint Tri, Super Sprint Tri, Sprint Du, and Olympic Distance triathletes, all run the same course to the first turn around at 2.5Km.  At this point they  turn and retrace their route to the finish line.

Near the Finish Line, the Olympic triathletes turn around and double back, and they repeat this out and back course and then finish.

The run begins at the top of the rail tunnel adjacent to Brockville City Hall. (duathletes second run begins in the Transition Zone adjacent to the tunnel. Their first run follows the run course to the 1.2 kilometre turn around.) The run is an out and back course with the first and last 700 metres on a closed roadway (Water St.). Runners head West from the start along Water St. and turn left onto St. Paul St. to Jessie St. left on Annie St. to Hartley St. to River St. and into St. Lawrence park to the 2.5 kilometre turning point, and return.

The route is generally flat throughout except for 2 short steep hills in the Park, and an uphill grade on Hartley St. on the run out. Most of the run course is tree lined residential streets which provide good shade. The start and finish stretches run through the Brockville waterfront. Intersections and turns are supervised by marshals, and there are water stations at the turns.

Water Stations on the Run Courses

There are 2 water stations on the 5Km course and 4 water stations on the 10Km course.  They are located at 1.25Km, 3.75Km, 6.25Km, 8.75Km and at the Finish Line.
