general information for triathlon & duathlon participants

somersault triathlon series events (swim-bike-run)
The Somersault Triathlon Series is now in its 20th season. This year the Series includes 10 triathlons. The Somersault Series begins on May 1st and ends on October 9th. Last year more than 10,800 participants of all ages and stages took part in the Series, and we look forward to hosting more than 12,000 participants in 2010.

Each Somersault event will feature additions and improvements based on our experiences and participant feedback from the 2009 season. Our goal is to continue to build the unique character of each event, and to strengthen our relationships with the communities in which they are held, for the benefit of the participant.

The Try A Tri events for novice participants are back by popular demand, as is the Super Sprint Triathlon for those who like the short distance races but who don't qualify as Try A Triers. We think you veterans with speed will like them.

The Sprint and Olympic disance races offer competition for the more fit, while for those who are very fit and tough, we offer two Iron 113 races - the Graham Beasley Iron 113, and the Canadian Iron 113. And of course we feature Ontario's only Iron 226 Triathlon & Duathlon race - The Canadian Iron 226, on September 4th.

We hope you can find something you like in our many event offerings, and that you give us a Tri in 2010!

somersault duathlon series events (run - bike - run)
All the same great features above are offered in the Somersault Duathlon Series events. In fact we offer more duathlon races than triathlon races in our program. Beginning in May and ending in October, we offer 11 great duathlons, featuring 17 different races.

somersault paddle triathlon series (canoe - bike - run) (kayak - bike - run)

This year we are offering 6 canoe/kayak triathlons in bot the Canoe , and the Kayak Triathlon Series. For those of you who would rather travel on the water rather than in it, these events are just the thing. Everything else is the same as a regular triathlon, but you paddle instead of swim that first leg. Our beach venues offer great 'put in' sites for this old but new race concept.

somersault swimcycle races (swim - run)
We have completely embraced the "SwimCycle" race concept and are offering at least one of these races at each of our triathlon events. SwimCycle races allow those whose legs are hurting, to test their fitness without running.

try a tri (swim - bike - run)
In 2009, newcomers again made up more than 15% of the participants in somersault traithlons in 2009 - a record. Each of these newcomers received a finish medal and was welcomed into the multi-sport world enthusiastically. Although the Try A Tri program welcomes newcomers, the 10 races in 2010 are also for those who just want to do short ones each year - you don't have to be a first timer.

swims

Yep, we now even offer swim only races at many o four triathlon events - at distances from 1500M to 4000 M.  Swimmers participate with the triathletes, but unlike them, they are finished after a short run from the water to the finish line.

race info updates
We are continuing our pre-race Newsletter program this year. We will be distributing 3 newsletters in the weeks leading up to each event. These info packages are important as they announce  changes, recommend race day procedures, and respond to your questions in the weeks leading up to the event.  Please be sure you have a valid email (home) address on your entry form if you wish to receive updated information.

somersault junior series
Somersault has embraced and enhanced the junior program in 2010. The Somersault Junior Series offers age categories from 13 & under to 19 & under. Appropriately shortened distance races are featured in our Try A Tri, Super Sprint Triathlon, Sprint Triathlon. and Sprint Duathlon at each Somersault event.

student entry fee discounts
All students, including university students, born in 1986 or later receive a 40% entry fee discount. this discount program hopefully makes Somersault events more accessible to our younger participants.

somersault club and school fundraising program
The Somersault FUNdraising program allows any youth group or school in the region to raise funds at Somersault events.  This program has unlimited potential for any group needing to raise funds at an event, while avoiding the organizational effort and risk.  Go to Charities at http://www.somersault.ca/eventsfundraising.htm for more information on this opportunity.

somersault race crew
Somersault provides unique work experiences and much needed income to high school and university students each summer.  These students work primarily behind the scenes to make our events successful.

Students can also work off their volunteer hours in many of our races, because charities do benefit from each of our events. Students interested in this experience should contact us at info@somersault.ca.

awards and medals
Finish medals are provided to all finishers in every Somersault race.

In addition, participants who finish in the top 3 in their age, weight, or relay category receive a finisher's gold, silver, or bronze medal "Lanyard". The medal 'Lanyard' must be picked up at the event.

The first place male and female finisher in each Somersault race (except the Tri A Tri and Wylie Ryan races) receives a merchandise  prize. All participants are eligible for draw prizes at each event, but must be there to be claim their prize.

certificates of performance
A Performance Certificate is available to all finishers of Somersault races. You are able to access and download your official finisher's certificate at www.somersault.ca, on Wednesday after each race. The certificate recognizes the individual's race performance.

awards not picked up on race day
Due to the administrative cost and time required to process post race requests for award medal lanyards, we require that they be picked up on race day.  After race day, you must mail a self addressed stamped envelope to Somersault Promotions, 411 Lefebvre Way, Ottawa, K1E 2W5, to have your award medal lanyard mailed to you.

championchip timing
Sportstats with its Championchip Timing System provide timing at each Somersault race.  This timing system requires that all participants wear a ChampionChip Bracelet on their ankle during the race.  This bracelet contains a computer chip that allows you to be timed.

No chip = no time.

You are responsible for obtaining your ChampionChip Bracelet on race morning from the Sportstats tent near the Finish Line.  Please do this at least 30 minutes before your race, as races will not be held up waiting for those who forgot their bracelets.

You must return your ChampionChip Bracelet immediately after you cross the finish line.  You are responsible for the cost of your chip if it is not returned - and it is expensive!.

your results (age as of December 31, 2010)
Your personal results will be posted at the race site shortly after you finish the race.  Please check the results as soon as you can, to be sure they are accurate.  If  there are discrepancies, go to the Sportstats timing crew near the Finish Line and provide them with the information you think is correct.  Have the timing people make changes before you leave the event site. Results will be posted on the http://www.somersault.ca/results.htm web site the evening of the race.

Our colourful event T-shirts are popular and cool.  If your entry is received by the Sunday before each race, you will receive one! There are no exceptions to this deadline, so enter early.  You may choose to upgrade to a Tech Shirt when you are entering online, at a slightly higher fee.

clydesdales & athenas
All Somersault Triathlons and Duathlons (except Try A Tri and Super Sprint) have Clydesdale (Men) and Athena (Women) categories. Clydesdale is for men who weigh 200 lbs. or more and Athena is for women who weigh 150 lbs or more.  If you choose one of these categories when you enter, you are not eligible for the age category awards.  Athena and Cludesdale contestants are required to "weigh in" at Race Kit Pick Up.

food and refreshments
This year you will enjoy fruit, bagels, water, and eLoad at the finish line.

courses and course measurement

All run courses are measured, and meet the generally accepted criteria of the sport. Swim courses are measured by survey instrument or GPS. Bicycle courses are measured by automobile odometer and are guaranteed to be within 5% of the advertised distance.

Participants are responsible to know and to stay on the race courses at all times. The courses are described in the entry information and on an online map on our web site. Maps will not generally be posted on race sites, so view them online before race day.

aid stations on course
Water and eLoad are available every 2.5Km on run courses.  In the longer endurance races water and eLoad are supplemented with energy bars - and in the case of the Canadian Iron 226, several other nutritional items are added.

volunteers
All events are dependent on significant volunteer support. We often make a donation to clubs or teams who can bring groups of volunteers to the event. We accept volunteers on the day of the race, to replace those who don't show up, so if you are accompanying a participant and would like to help out, please contact us at info@somersault.ca. Most of the races also offer volunteers a souvenir T-shirt.

race day age
- Ages are as of December 31, 2010. Your age on that day will determine the age category in which you will be placed at Somersault races. Enter your birth date and age correctly on the entry form, and there won’t be any age mistakes on your results.
